What is SMA progress?

SMA progress is a follow-on milk which is specially made to provide important nutrients that your baby needs, but in a smaller amount of milk than infant formula so your baby still has an appetite for food. Progress should be used as part of a mixed weaning diet and can be used up until 2 years of age.

Why use SMA progress?

Babies are born with a store or iron, however this is used up by around 4-6 months of age. It is therefore essential that iron is obtained from the baby's diet. Vitamin C is also important to ensure the iron is absorbed.

During and even after the weaning period, it can be difficult for babies to fulfil their nutritional requirements for iron and other key nutrients from the amount of food they consume.

Feeding 500-600 ml of progress each day from 6 months (350 ml from 1 year) can help ensure babies receive the nutrients they need to assist their growth and development.

Cows' milk contains very little iron or vitamins C & D, and the UK Department of Health and the Food Safety Authority of Ireland recommend that it should not be given as the main drink during the first year of life.

Important notice.

SMA progress is a follow-on milk for babies over 6 months and is not intended to replace breast feeding. When used in conjunction with solid feeding, it provides the nourishment essential to a baby's healthy and sustained growth.

Good dental hygiene is as important for babies and toddlers as it is for older children and adults. Prolonged or frequent contact of drinks or feeds with teeth, e.g. from using bottles or beakers as comforters, increases the risk of tooth decay. Use a cup or beaker by 6 months if possible, and in any case as soon as the first tooth appears. In accordance with normal dental hygiene, your baby's teeth should be cleaned after the last feed at night. Ask your Healthcare Professional or Dentist for advice. What is SMA white?

SMA White is a nutritionally complete "Casein" (Curd) based infant milk. It is specially made with a balance of milk proteins for hungrier bottle fed babies and may help delay weaning until the recommended time. You may wish to discuss changing to SMA white with your healthcare professional or the SMA Careline.

When to use different milks.

0-12 months - SMA Gold. First infant milk from birth onwards.

0-12 months - SMA White. If your baby is still hungry after a feed and not yet ready for weaning you may wish to talk to your healthcare professional about using SMA white a casein (curd) based milk. At six months you may wish to consider moving to SMA progress.

6-24 months - SMA Progress. Follow-on milk from 6 months to 2 years. Contains extra vitamins and minerals to complement the weaning diet.

What is SMA gold?
